They are also offering a private version of the tour, starting at $845 CAD for up to 6 passengers plus HST. This is a more in-depth 5-6 hour experience that includes stops at Point Prim Lighthouse, St. John’s Church, Jack’s Heritage Road, Pinette, and time for a lunch stop in the area. There’s a particular kind of springtime magic on PEI. The summer crowds haven’t arrived yet. The roads, albeit a little bumpy after a long winter, are not too busy. The air smells like salt and fresh earth, and there are, blessedly, no bugs. The beaches aren’t ready for swimming, but they’re wide open for exploring, and if you walk the shoreline in May or June, you may find the first sea glass of the season before anyone else gets to it. Along the ponds and streams, locals are out looking for the first trout of the season.

Island-wide, spring has its own rhythm. Inns and cottages reopen after a long winter. Dairy bars flip their signs from closed to open for the first time since September. Seasonal kitchens fire up again. And lobster season is starting.  

The Points East Coastal Drive covers the eastern end of PEI from the eastern tip at East Point and south toward Point Prim. This part of the Island has a quiet, understated charm that tends to stick with people long after they leave. In spring you’ll find active fishing harbours with boats loaded with lobster, tulip fields coming into bloom, wide-open beaches to roam, and restaurants and patios just opening their doors for the season. Take your time, chat with locals, and dress in layers. There’s a lot to discover out here.

1. Harvey Moore Wildlife Sanctuary

Wander through 3 km of peaceful trails that circle a large pond and wind through lush greenery. This sanctuary is ideal for birdwatching and quiet reflection in a serene, protected setting.

2. Roma at Three Rivers

Explore 4 km of scenic trails that trace the edge of the Brudenell River and pass through one of the last stands of Acadian Forest in the region. Combined with the site’s historical interpretation and riverside views, it’s both a cultural and natural experience.

3. Cardigan River Trail

For a slightly more challenging walk, take on the 6 km Cardigan River Trail. This route takes you down to the riverbank and follows the meandering shoreline, offering a mix of forest, open views, and elevation changes.

The beaches of PEI are what our little island is best known for, there is something about them that makes it feel as though you’re stepping into the pages of a romance novel. The white sands stretch as far as the eye can see, turquoise waves crash gently against the rust-colored cliffs lining the beaches shores.

As I walk along the shore, the gentle waves lap at my feet, transporting me back to carefree childhood days playing on Bothwell Beach. Fond memories wash over me of lazy afternoons spent combing these same shores with my family. Our faithful golden retriever running ahead, eager to discover what surprises the tide had brought in overnight.

As an adult, I still find peace at these beaches right outside my door. My son’s delighted shrieks still echo in my mind from when he stumbled upon a message in a bottle that washed upon the sandbar a few years back, proof that magic touches these shores. You never know what you’re going to find when visiting the island’s beaches.

There are so many incredible beaches awaiting locals and tourists, each offering a unique experience. I have categorized some of our 50 Beaches to help you decide which ones to visit based on what you’re drawn to.

Beaches for Sea Glass Hunting

Sea glass in shades of emerald, sapphire, and amber glitter like hidden treasure among the grains of sand on many of our beautiful Eastern beaches. At low tide an adventure to Goose River Beach and Cow River Beach will fill your heart and your pockets. There is something about the way your heart races every time you spot that vibrant coloured glass laying amongst the rocks that never gets old.

Souris Beach is also an incredible beach where the gentle waves lap the sandy shore. Though the glittering treasures of sea glass scattered across the beach may catch your eye, be mindful where you step – remnants of past industry lay among the stones and shells and can be sharp. While swimming and pets are best enjoyed elsewhere, Souris Beach remains a serene spot to explore and daydream, discovering each fragment and wondering about it’s story.

Beaches with Boardwalks

The beach can be a place of serenity for the soul, yet sand between the toes isn’t for everyone. For those seeking the peaceful allure of the seaside without the mess of sandy shoes, there are many beautiful beaches with boardwalks along Points East Coastal Drive that allow you to stroll along while taking in the sights and sounds of the ocean. Georgetown’s West Street Beach, Souris Beach and Greenwich offer you winding and inviting boardwalks that carry you on your coastal adventures.

The Singing Sands

At the Eastern tip of the island the sands sing a soothing melody and hold a sense of wonder. The pure white sands contain high levels of silica that create a gentle and magical squeaking sound when the sand is hot and dry. This tranquil phenomenon has fittingly earned the beaches the nickname “The Singing Sands.” You can experience these harmonious sounds at Basin Head Beach, Bothwell Beach, and Little Harbour Beach as you stroll along the peaceful shorelines. The singing sands draw you in and serenade you with nature’s gentle song as you explore.

Hiking Beaches

Poverty Beach and Greenwich offer excellent hiking opportunities along the beach for adventurous souls. These scenic hikes allow you to raise or lower your heart rate as desired. Lace up your sneakers and get ready to discover the beauty and adventure they provide.

Secluded Beaches

At East Lake Beach and MacFarlane Road Beach you’ll find the solitude your soul craves. No crowds, just you and the endless blue horizon. Walk barefoot in the sand, breathe in the salty air, and open your heart without fear of others hearing what you have to say. Here, you can reflect in peace, chat with nature, and reconnect with your innermost self.

Beaches to Watch Boats

There is something about watching the fishing boats coming into the harbour as the sun begins to set that captures the essence of this coastal region. Along the sandy shores, one can sit and watch with a hot cup of coffee or tea in hand as fishermen in their uniquely named vessels return from a long day at sea.

The incoming boats feel like a free show playing out across the water as waves roll in. During tuna season, you may get lucky and see one come to shore, offering a chance to snap a photo and congratulate the members on board. Prime spots to take in the charm of the fishing boats and harbours include Savage Harbour, North Lake, Naufrage, Wood Islands and Beach Point Beach.

The 50 beaches along Points East Coastal Drive offer a tranquil escape all year long. In the Spring, the gentle breeze carries the sweet scent of blooming wildflowers as bird’s sing a song that fills the air. Summer brings warm rays of sunshine glimmering on the waves, beckoning you to sink your toes into the soft sand and enjoy a cool dip in the ocean with family and friends. When Autumn arrives, the crashing waves and salt-kissed cold air create a soothing scene for long walks along the shore. Even Winter’s chilly winds can’t diminish the peaceful vibes of our 50 beaches, where you can bundle up and watch the clouds drift by as you sip out of your favourite thermos as you collect sea glass to add to your collection. Each season gifts its own special serenity to be savoured on your adventures, let’s get out and explore.

Ashley MacDonald is a Nova Scotian born freelance writer who began using her love for writing and photography as a form of therapy during her son’s cancer treatment. Something I have learned in my years on Prince Edward Island is the beauty and importance of bundling up. Those warm moments inside can feel like heaven, but exploring the beauty within nature that the island has to offer around us makes us appreciate those cozy moments so much more. Coming inside the warm house with rosy cheeks and tired legs often leads to a clearer mind and a thankful heart. I couldn’t imagine living somewhere that didn’t allow me to experience the beauty of changing seasons. Although the colder months can feel long and difficult at times, they also make you appreciate the warmer, brighter ones so much more. If you simply lean into it, you get the chance to enjoy so much more of the island. The month of November still has so much to offer.

It’s time to pull out the bag of winter clothes from the attic. Grab a knitted sweater, a warm jacket and the hats and mittens that someone you know made with love. It’s time to head out to explore some of the island’s beautiful parks and trails. There are still leaves on the trees and moving streams to be admired before the snow covers the ground like a cold, white blanket. Here are a few of Points East Coastal Drive’s trails that I have been lucky enough to explore in the last week.

Mooney’s Pond Trail

The Mooney’s Pond Trail is a beautiful and well-maintained trail in Kings County, PEI. The trail leads you over many beautiful bridges and look-offs, visitors can take in the beautiful views overlooking the pond that it wraps around. It is a short 1km loop making it the perfect family adventure. Bring a thermos of coffee or tea with you and enjoy a warm drink with the crisp, cold air on your face. In addition to the natural beauty of the pond, visitors can also learn about the Atlantic Salmon that inhabit the area. The interpretive centre on the property is open by chance and provides a great opportunity to gain insight into the unique envirnoment. The trail also has plenty of areas for picnics where you can relax and have a bite to eat with family and friends. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful stroll or a spot to sit and enjoy the views, Mooney’s Pond Trail is the perfect place to take in the beauty of nature.

Auburn Demonstration Woodlot Trail

The beautiful Auburn Demonstration Woodlot Trail in Watervale, Prince Edward Island is 4.3kms long and can take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour to complete depending on your speed. It is considered easy/moderate and loops around leading you through the peaceful, wooded path. Experience the flora and fauna around you as you explore the wooded area and keep an eye out for interesting species that inhabit it’s forest. Once you reach the pond, take some time to explore, relax and appreciate the scenery around you.

Dromore Trail

Not far from the Auburn Demonstration Woodlot is a hiking-only wooded trail. Dromore Trail is located in Queen’s County about 8kms from Mount Stewart, PEI. Follow the red dirt roads that lead you to the beautiful hiking trail. Although Hurricane Fiona caused damage to so many of the island’s lovely trails, there is still so much to appreciate. This trail has multiple paths and is around 15km if all of them are included. It is a magical hike through the forest with its wooden bridges, boardwalks, and clay steps that have been built all throughout the walk to keep your feet dry over the wet areas and streams that are spread throughout it’s path.

MacLures Pond

Located in the quaint little town of Murray River is the captivating MacLures Pond. Welcoming you to the property is a bridge that overlooks the beautiful, cascading dam and freshwater pond. Admire the view of the trees reflecting on the water as eagles magestically hunt for their next meal. MacLures Pond is the largest freshwater pond in Prince Edward Island, surrounded by Red and White Pines that have been growing there for many years, some dating back to pre-1870. It is the perfect place for nature lovers to birdwatch and identify the different species all around. Bring your furry friend along for the adventure, they will be grateful.

New Harmony Demonstration Woodlot & Scenic Trail

There is something about the way the golden light enters this protected forest, leaving stories in the shadows that paint the red dirt road and make it feel easier to breathe. In Eastern, PEI we feel lucky to be able to experience the New Harmony trail just off of the Baltic Road. The trail is filled with hard and soft woods and interpretive signage for those who are interested. It is well maintained by PEI Forestry and loops around, taking about one hour to explore. It is rare that you will run into another person on this trail, making it the perfect way to unwind and find peace after a long day.

PEI National Park – Greenwich

The dynamic coastal environment of Greenwich is home to wetlands and forests that provide the perfect habitat for various flora and fauna. With beautiful surprises around every corner it is truly a place you want to experience. As you first enter the trail you are welcomed by a traditional Mi’kmaq wigwam that is tucked safely within the trees. A historic fishing village for the Mi’kmaq with archeological evidence of visitation from over 10,000 years ago. The area was also home to the earliest French settlers who migrated from their shipwreck at Naufrage. Greenwich became a PEI National Park in 1998 but before it was a park it was farmed by multiple local families.

As you make your way over the boardwalk, canopied by overhanging trees you come to an opening that stops you in your tracks. Experience the breathtaking views as you step foot onto the floating boardwalk that was built over Bowley Pond. The glorious sand dunes that encircle you as you continue your adventure towards the beach make it feel as though you are travelling through the Scottish Highlands. The dunes form a horseshoe shape around you, giving you a feeling of protection and comfort. Some of the largest dunes on Prince Edward Island live here and there is something about them that makes you realize just how small we actually are in the grand scheme of things.

Kelly Green Park/Mieke Trail Park

If you are ever going through Morell, be sure to check out this sweet little Kelly Green Park/Mieke Trail Park that is central to the area. It’s easy to walk and filled with many different species of trees and plants. Be sure to keep an eye out as you enjoy the path as it is filled with wooden signage identifying all the different trees and shrubs that grow within it. An ideal location for birdwatching as it’s surrounded by woodland and wetland species, the trail was named after a woman named Mieke who was an avid birdwatcher. You’ll be sure to spot some feathered friends on your walk!

The Island Walk

Something that brings a lot of joy and adventure to islanders is The Island Walk. The Island Walk is a 700km walking trail that loops around Prince Edward Island and takes approximately 32 days to complete if you walk 20-25 kilometers per day. Many people need to plan to walk 20-25kms per day as it takes a lot of time and commitment but thankfully there is no rush and there are many chances to complete the Island Walk in sections which allows you to spend more time exploring the trails and sections that peak your interest.

The Island Walk takes you along the outside perimeter of the Island and allows you to see both tips of the Island from North Cape to East Point. The trail intertwines through Charlottetown and Summerside, as well as many small communities throughout PEI. The walk loops around so you can end where you started.

The Island Walk route takes you along much of the Confederation Trail and along the beautiful ocean, classic red dirt roads and sandy, white beaches. The walk is not considered difficult because there are so many unique options for everyone. There are still a lot of beautiful days left to explore the island and I’m feeling inspired to take advantage of it with my family. The hustle and bustle of Summer is always fun and exciting but when the air becomes crisp and the leaves begin to change to red and gold, we begin to slow down along with the flora and fauna around us. There is no shame in slowing down, it’s always been something l’ve leaned into.

Beaches, lobster rolls, beer gardens and red dirt roads surrounded by wild flowers. The island has always been known for its Summers but in the wise words of Anne Shirley Cuthbert, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” It’s time to highlight why she felt that way and offer up some ideas of things to do this Fall season on the island.

Apple Picking

As Summer collapses into Fall, Strawberry picking steps out of the way and welcomes apple picking at the beautiful islands orchards. A well loved and classic ingredient in many Autumnal baked goods. My favourite thing about apple picking is it leads to multiple Fall experiences. The first experience it putting on your plaid, grabbing a basket and road tripping to an apple orchard with family and friends, sometimes followed by a photoshoot. The second experience is apple picking is often followed by another day full of baking delicious apple inspired treats in the kitchen that you get to enjoy or gift to your loved ones. I can just smell the aroma of apples and cinnamon on a cold day now. No matter what you choose to do with the apples you picked, the experience screams Autumn and is always a fond memory to look back on. MacPhee’s Orchard and Red Point Orchard offer a beautiful variety of apples to pick from to name a few.

Scenic Trails

Whether it be on foot, bike or 4 wheeler, the Island trails never fail to disappoint. Summertime in the trails is something to experience but when things slow down, the leaves begin to change and fall and you step into the earthy aroma of the wooded trails with no mosquitoes in sight, there’s no urgency. You get the chance to slow down without sweating and waving your hands around like you’re at a Taylor Swift concert. It’s like stepping into a whole different world away from the hustle and bustle of it all. Feeling that satisfying crunch under your feet almost feels like you’re making a deeper connection with the Earth. The best part is so many of our trails lead to water. Whether it be streams, oceans or lakes you’re in for a beautiful treat.

Farmer’s Markets & Stands

I don’t know about you but there is such a different feel when you visit a local farmer’s market as opposed to a busy grocery store. Picking up fruits and veggie’s that come straight from the hands of your local farmer and being able to present them to your family in the form of a chili or stew, could you get more down to earth than that? I really don’t think so.

Fortune Bridge Farms offers something for people of all ages. Vegetables, pumpkins, handmade lotions, local honey, corn mazes, bikes, slides and a beer garden for those who are of age. It’s a full family experience. I visited the farm a month ago and I swear I had more fun riding around on their off road tricycles than anyone else there. Sometimes it’s nice to let yourself be a big kid and not care who is watching.

Petting Zoos

If you’re looking for the perfect family friendly outing I highly recommend a visit to Brudenell Miniatures Barnyard Zoo located just East of Montague! Stop in, grab a container of food and feed the adorable animals. It’s truly an experience for the whole family.

Craft Breweries and Wineries

A word that I use regularly when entering the colder seasons is hygge. Hygge is a Danish word for “creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people.” | love sitting by the wood stove with a hot coffee in my hand on a stormy morning. Cats snuggled up on my lap while my daughter flips through her books. Those slow, quiet moments are good for the soul.

Quiet mornings at home are magic but is there anything more hygge than good food, drinks and music on a chilly evening with the people you love the most? With it getting dark earlier, to me that sounds like the recipe for a perfect Fall evening. We are blessed to have incredible local breweries who know how to offer a good time to their visitors. Local music, warm lighting, board games, delicious food and craft beer that is made with so much love. The maritimes love a good kitchen party in the Summer months but there is something so welcoming about a kitchen party when there’s a chill in the air and the night falls quickly. It almost feels like you’ve been transported back in time.

As you exit the PEI Ferry stop into Rossignol Winery in Murray River and pick up a bottle of delicious wine while overlooking the beautiful crashing waves of the Northumberland Strait. This stunning vineyard offers a variety of table wines, fruit wines and liqueurs. Be sure to check out their art gallery when you visit to find a little piece of the island to bring back home with you.

For an incredible evening in Montague I highly recommend checking out the unique craft breweries that overlook opposite sides of the Montague River, Copper Bottom Brewing and Bogside Brewing both offer up incredible talent, food and beer and you’re guaranteed to have an incredible time. If you’re more of a homebody grab a few tall boys to bring home and sample in your jammies by the fire!

Sunday Drives

We are so blessed to be surrounded by so many stunning beaches and lighthouses on the island, you could spend a full week taking them all in. Whether it be the photo inspiration, beach glass hunting, a search for wild foxes or maybe a cold dip for the brave ones, beaches and lighthouses are not just a Summer activity. The parking lots are easier to navigate, the unpredictable, stormy weather can wash up a lot of magical treasures within the waves and you can comfortably wear a sweater and feel the cool, salty air on your face. What’s not to love? Maybe stop at some antique shops along the way and pick up some preloved treasures. Cozy Cafés & Bakeries

I will forever love the feeling of stepping into a warm and inviting café or bakery with a good book in your hand ready to order your go to drink or baked good. The welcoming aroma, the healing hum of people chattering and sipping on coffee while writing, meeting up with old friends or enjoying delicious homemade baked goods.

A stop at Maroon Pig Art Gallery & Sweet Shop for a stunning collection of art and baked goods is a MUST. Maroon Pig is a small batch bakery where everything is made from scratch and locally sourced. Check out their weekly lunch specials, everything you get from this sweet little shop is made with nothing but love.

If you’re looking for some delicious artisanal baked goods I highly recommend checking out Country Taste Kitchen & Bakery in Vernon Bridge. They specialize in European pastries, baked goods, breakfast, lunch and espresso. You can’t go wrong, your mouth will be watering before you even walk out the door.

Horseback Riding

When driving around PEI you can’t help but notice the beautiful scenic fields filled with horses on your travels. There are many times that I feel drawn to pullover and take a photo or say hello but how lovely would it be to actually be able to ride these gentle giants? Horseback riding in the Fall is nothing short of magic. Walking the trails alone can be beautiful enough but with a noble stead leading the way, you can’t help but feel like you’re going off on a heroic adventure. Red House Stables in Fortune provides an absolutely beautiful environment for riding lessons, wagon rides, horse camps and even sleigh rides in the winter. An experience for the whole family.
