Spring on PEI is all about the in-between moments. The quiet roads, the first patio drinks, the smell of the ocean after a long winter. This itinerary gives you a planned route, but don’t be afraid to go off-script. Some of the best Island experiences happen when you follow a hand-painted sign or take a road you didn’t plan on. Take your time, chat with locals, and enjoy the slower pace. We have a feeling you’ll want to come back in the summer, but spring might just become your new favourite.

───────

There’s a particular kind of springtime magic on PEI. The summer crowds haven’t arrived yet. The roads, albeit a little bumpy after a long winter, are not too busy. The air smells like salt and fresh earth, and there are, blessedly, no bugs. The beaches aren’t ready for swimming, but they’re wide open for exploring, and if you walk the shoreline in May or June, you may find the first sea glass of the season before anyone else gets to it. Along the ponds and streams, locals are out looking for the first trout of the season.

Island-wide, spring has its own rhythm. Inns and cottages reopen after a long winter. Dairy bars flip their signs from closed to open for the first time since September. Seasonal kitchens fire up again. And lobster season is starting.

The Points East Coastal Drive covers the eastern end of PEI from the eastern tip at East Point and south toward Point Prim. This part of the Island has a quiet, understated charm that tends to stick with people long after they leave. In spring you’ll find active fishing harbours with boats loaded with lobster, tulip fields coming into bloom, wide-open beaches to roam, and restaurants and patios just opening their doors for the season. Take your time, chat with locals, and dress in layers. There’s a lot to discover out here.

Prince Edward Island might be small, but don’t let the size fool you—we’ve got more lighthouses per square mile than anywhere else in North America. For a place you can drive across in an afternoon, we sure pack in a lot of charm (and coastal beacons).

Back in the day, the sea was our main road. Boats were how people got around, and lighthouses were as important as traffic lights are now. Before trains and cars came along, these sturdy old towers helped sailors find their way, and for many of them, a light on the horizon meant they were almost home.

A lot of our first lighthouses were built before PEI joined Confederation in 1873. You’ll notice they’re mostly wooden, made when timber was easy to come by. And while some have seen a few facelifts over the years, many still look just like they did back then – standing tall on the edge of the Island, keeping watch over the waves.

These days, lighthouses are more about pleasure than business. They’ve become little gems for road trippers, Instagrammers, and anyone who loves a salty breeze and a view you can’t beat. Some are open to visitors, with cozy gift shops, picnic spots, and volunteers happy to share a tale or two. The entrance fees help keep these places going, so future generations can enjoy them too.

In this guide, we feature 8 lighthouses in the Points East Coastal Drive region – 6 of which are open during the summer. Each one has its own story, its own charm, and a whole lot of Island character. So pack a lunch, gas up the car, and hit the road – we’ve put together a guide to help you find them and other fun stops along the way.

Prince Edward Island might be small, but we sure know how to raise a glass. Scattered across red-dirt roads and tucked into tiny villages, our craft breweries, cozy wineries, and off-the-map distilleries are full of flavour, and not just the kind you sip. These places are about people, stories, and that easygoing Island way of doing things.

Back when taverns were few and far between, Islanders made their own spirits (sometimes quietly, in the woods), and that DIY spirit still runs deep. Today, it shows up in citrusy pale ales, small-batch ciders, bold reds, and even legal moonshine that’d make your granddad proud. You’ll find farm stands with burgers and beer gardens with yard games, breezy patios with live music, and cellar doors that welcome you like family.

This tour winds through the Points East Coastal Drive region and highlights 6 of our favourite stops to sip and savour, and 4 other interesting stops along the way. From riverside breweries to rolling vineyards, it’s your perfect excuse to slow down, take in the view, and enjoy the Island—one pour at a time. Designate a driver, pack some snacks, and don’t be shy with your questions. Every stop has a story, and we’ve got a good feeling you’ll want to hear them all.

Start your day at Orwell Corner Historic Village, where you’ll experience rural Prince Edward Island life as it was in the 1800s. This living history site offers hands-on experiences and insights into traditional farming, trades, and daily routines. Allow approximately two hours to explore.

From Orwell, drive to Roma at Three Rivers National Historic Site. Once the site of a bustling 1730s French settlement and the first intercolonial trading post on PEI, Roma offers a glimpse into early Acadian life. Learn about Jean Pierre Roma’s efforts to establish a trading empire and discover the birthplace of A.A. MacDonald, one of the Fathers of Confederation.

Lunch at Roma is a highlight of the day. Meals are prepared and served by historical interpreters in costume, with the option to dine indoors at the Pavilion or outside on the deck overlooking the Montague River.

In the afternoon, head to Georgetown, where you can visit the beautifully maintained A.A. MacDonald Memorial Gardens and enjoy the charming character of the town.

Overnight options include a range of cozy bed and breakfasts in both Georgetown and nearby Montague.

Dinner suggestions include one of the locally loved restaurants in either town—many offering fresh seafood, local fare, and warm hospitality.

Trip Two: History, Scenery, and Local Culture

Begin at the Montague Museum for an engaging overview of the town’s history and heritage.

Next, drive to Roma at Three Rivers, where you can take a guided tour of the historic French trading post. Explore walking trails and participate in hands-on activities that reflect life in the 1730s.

Return to Montague to enjoy the vibrant waterfront area. Stroll along the trails or browse through Artisans on the Water, showcasing the work of local makers.

Take a break with afternoon refreshments at one of Montague’s popular spots: the Tiki Bar, Bogside Brewing, or Copper Bottom Brewing—each with its own atmosphere and selection of local beverages.

For dinner, choose from a variety of restaurants and pubs in Montague or Georgetown, many offering live music, local specialties, and welcoming service.

If your visit falls between July 1 and September 30, be sure to check out the Close to the Ground music series at Hillcrest United Church every Thursday evening.
