Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute (“GWBI”) is a monastery for Buddhist nuns, located in eastern Prince Edward Island, Canada. We are the largest group of Buddhist nuns outside of Asia studying and preserving Tibetan Buddhism, a rapidly fading world heritage.
As of January 2026, there are approximately 600 nuns at GWBI. While most of us come from Taiwan, some of us hail from Canada, China, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United States.
Join us on a guided tour of Inside the Journey of a Buddhist Nun exhibition at our Welcome House. Learn more about Buddhism, Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute and the life of a nun. There is also a meditative space for all who would like to escape the bustle of daily life.
Once found only in the East, now found in Eastern PEI: Experience the traditional Asian architecture nestled within the idyllic scenes of rural PEI, where the four corners of the rooftop curve upwards, symbolizing our aspirations to soar on the wings of compassion and wisdom.
