Day park, white sand, trails. Pack a picnic and follow the boardwalk to this long white sandy unsupervised beach, its white sands especially beautiful as the tide comes in. Facilities include an eating shelter, washrooms and change rooms.

Sarah (Sally) Steele was born in Little Pond in 1817, one of nine children of Lauchlan and Mary (MacDonald) Steele who leased the land on which Sally’s Beach lies. Sally never married, spent her whole life on this land and in the end came to own it. When she became unable to take care of herself the Alex Mackenzie family took her in and when she passed away at age 85 she left this land to them. Ever after it was called ‘Sally’s Beach’. Long before Sally’s became a Provincial Park in 2000, it was an informal public beach. Recognized access dates back to the late 1800s when it was a place for farmers to collect gravel and seaweed. By the nineteen-fifties it was the place for community picnics and family reunions when relatives came home from ‘away’.

Two hiking trails:
Both start at Sally’s Beach; the first is a pleasant 0.8km (0.5 miles) walk around the point and back. The upper trail starts where the lower trail ends, and is an enjoyable 3.2km (2 miles) walk across the beach and around the property. Interpretive markers explain the trail and the trail provides scenic views of water and land.

The largest provincial park on The Points East Coastal Drive offers a quaint river beach overlooking the scenic Brudenell River & Brudenell Island Pioneer Cemetery.

The park has a multitude of activities to amuse campers and day visitors. The tiny island of Brudenell Island can be reached across a gravel bar. A stair leads up to a short path through the trees to a large monument marking an old Scottish burial site. As well, daily activities are scheduled as part of Brudenell’s recreation and interpretive programs for children and adults. A naturalist is available to inform visitors and locals of the natural features of Prince Edward Island. Private operators offer tennis, canoeing, windsurfing, sea kayaking, and horseback riding along the shore. Horseshoes and lawn bowling are available.

Trails:
The hiking and biking trail system offers flora and fauna. The Wildflower Trail preserves and displays trees and plants common to P.E.I. in their native habitats: woodlands, meadows, stream banks, bogs, and fresh and salt water marshes. Plants are marked with both scientific and common names.

This picturesque fishing wharf with short red sand beach allows for clam digging at low tide, sea kayaking, and leisurely beach strolls.

The view across from the wharf and the fishing village of Annandale is the remains of a ferry wharf called Long Wharf. During the lobster season in May and June more than 25 fishing boats berth at the wharf. It is busiest between 4 and 5 a.m. as fishers leave to check their traps. The boats usually return between 11 a.m. and noon.

One of the most intriguing natural sites in the country – CBC. With a beach that sings, Basin Head is world renowned for nine miles of magnificent white sand. In addition to “singing sands,” another draw is “the run” making it the beach of choice for teenagers. A boardwalk provides access to the beach. Walk across the bridge which spans the very popular run. Lifeguards are on duty from late June until September 1. There are outdoor showers at the beach area and change rooms and washroom facilities in the upper area, by the museum.

The site overlooks the Northumberland Strait. For more solitude, walk the endless expanse of white sand to Bothwell Beach. Capture the beauty in photos while enjoying the sounds of the surf and shore birds.

Day Park:
Stroll the boardwalk to gift shops and take-out restaurants. Enjoy the gazebo, rest and picnic areas and take in some of the ongoing site events. Volleyball nets and a children’s play village enhance the experience. While not open to the public, the Cannery at Basin Head is a provincially Designated Heritage Place. The Provincial Day Park has free admission.

A Marine Protected Area:
The tidal lagoon behind the dunes is habitat for a variety of Giant Irish Moss called Chondrus crispus. This is the only place in the world that it is found. To protect the unique strain of Giant Irish Moss and its habitat, the Basin Head watershed is designated a Marine Protected Area.

This particular strain of Irish Moss called Chondrus crispus, is also referred to as Giant Moss. It is distinctive because it has a unique life cycle, does not attach to the bottom and is significantly larger than the normal plant found elsewhere. In addition, it has a higher concentration of carrageen, a stabilizing and thickening agent used in many household products.

This is a place that you don’t want to miss.

Canadian travel website vacay.ca has named Basin Head Provincial Park the best beach in Canada in 2016

Basin Head Beach was choosen as “Best of the East” in a survey of top spots in Prince Edward Island by loyal readers of Progress Magazine.
January / February 2007 Progress

Basin Head beach was given a nomination by CBC viewers as one of the most intriguing natural sites in the country. The CBC wrote on its website…”Walking along the beautiful white sand produces an interesting sound….akin to singing, or some would say squeaking.”

White and red sand beach. Clamming and beach combing. No Facilities. The beach overlooks the five Murray Islands, of which three are Protected Natural Areas.

Walk to the northeast end of the beach where once stood the front range light of Beach Point Lighthouse, at the entrance to Murray River. This small lighthouse was pulled from it moorings and washed down the beach during a violent storm in December of 2010. It lined up with a rear range light on Penny Point to enable mariners to avoid the sandbars off Poverty Beach. There are fishing harbours and wharfs in the estuary at Murray Harbour, Murray River, Machon Point and Mink River.
