3 acts that span the nation deliver powerful performances, true to their roots. In demand on folk festival stages is Plains-Cree singer-songwriter Wyatt C. Louis. Named one of CBCs 2024 ‘8 Indigenous Artists to Know’, the most recent album ‘Chandler’ from the Treaty 6 artist offers stunning vocals and a signature indie/roots spin on the country music ingrained in the geography of their childhood. Across the country, Portuguese-Canadian Nico Paulo has become an essential part of the Newfoundland music scene. Longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize for her debut album in 2023 and called ‘your new favorite vocalist’ by MTV, she shares open-hearted songs with enchanting delivery. Bridging the gap is PEI trad group Maukin, who will quench your Celtic thirst with their rich compositions and melodies, shaped from the cultural clay of their home province. Pulling from Irish, Scottish and Acadian tradition, this exciting new group of impressive players leaves a lasting impression.
